Hardcastle Crags

Below are details of the worksite – but please check the weekly email as these may vary.

As the name suggests this is a Hilly wooded site in the Pennines, with glorious views across Hebden Bridge and the surrounding countryside. It is also home to Gibson Mill

Hardcastle CragsType of work:

This site is in a steep Valley with a river running through it.  The Pennine way also passes nearby.  We have done various tasks including Thistle thrashing, Bracken and Balsam bashing, Road repairs, and leaky dam building to hold water on the moors to prevent flooding further downhill.

Location:

The main Midegehole carpark (yes there is a clue in the name) is at the end of a narrow lane in the Valley. Drive to the end of the road and turn right into the carpark. Use postcode HX7 7AL.

If asked to meet at Old Estate office also known as Hollin Hall, drive along the valley through the carpark turn right up the hill to the overflow carpark, continue up that road past the sign that says no unauthorised vehicles then continue up the road for about ½ mile. The Estate office is on the right, there is limited parking there. There are a few more spaces in a disused quarry further up the hill, as the land flattens out.

Public Transport:

There is a train from Manchester that arrives in Hebden Bridge in time for a 10am start. Please contact the leader as you will need a lift from the station to the worksite.

Car Share meeting points:

We rarely carshare to this location. It may be possible to lift share from Quarry bank Mill, it takes 1 1/2/ hours to drive from here. Please contact the leader to find out.

Facilities:

There are toilets down the road from the main carpark, and if we Park at Hollin hall.

As with most sites you may be working several minutes’ walk from the carpark. The site is fairly flat.

Usual meeting Time:

10:00  – please check email for confirmation of the time.
