Quarry Bank Mill and Styal Country Park

Below are details of the worksite – but please check the weekly email as these may vary.

This is our home base where we have a tool shed, and where we meet for car share.

One of Britain's greatest industrial heritage sites, showing how a complete industrial community lived and worked. Quarry Bank Mill is a cotton mill and was run by the Greg Family it is powered by Europe's most powerful working waterwheel.

New to the mill in 2010 was the stunning Upper Garden, the Greg family's picturesque valley garden.

Styal village, was built by the family to house the mill workers is still a thriving community today.

The area has 2 rivers an old quarry, so there are wooded hills and open agricultural land.

Styal ChapelType of work:

This is the site of the BBC Countryfile wood which we helped to plant. We can also be found putting up (or pulling down) fencing, improving paths. Cutting back vegetation.  Litter picking with a view– you may even get to wade in the river, or watch the aeroplanes at Manchester airport next door. There is also lots of Balsam to pull up by the rivers.

Location:

We normally meet in the staff carpark – go through the main carpark entrance drive to the end and turn left.  If it’s sunny there are plenty of trees round the edge for shade.

Public Transport:

There are trains to Styal from Manchester, please contact the leader to arrange a lift from the station if you’d like one.

Facilities:

There is a café and ice-cream/coffee shop in the valley by the mill, there are also toilets there. As with most sites you may be working several minutes’ walk from the carpark.

Usual Meeting Time

9:30 – please check email for confirmation of the time.
